A shuffle keeps its library in iTunesSD rather than the database every other click-wheel iPod uses, so it needs a writer of its own — two, because the 2nd generation and the 4th don't agree on the format. The intent: one playlist onto a shuffle, 2nd or 4th generation, without spoken track names. The 3rd generation is left out on purpose, having no buttons to steer with.
